My preschool-age granddaughters were afraid of bugs of all kinds and sizes, even tiny ones. I searched our local library’s catalogue for books that might address this at their level, and didn’t find anything. There were books with information about bugs, but none that I could find that talked about a fear of bugs.
I asked a children’s librarian to help me search. She didn’t find anything either.
So, I wrote The Giggly Bug for my little girls, and I’m delighted to share it with you too. A friendly bug befriends a preschool age girl–yes, a silly story that appeals to a young child’s imagination.
Even for us adults, naming our fears is the first step toward getting perspective on whether they are realistic or not.
I asked Aderyn Ramsay to illustrate The Giggly Bug because she loves bugs! She can tell you the names and many other details about each of the bugs she drew for this story. They all live in her yard, and almost all of them are completely harmless.
